Kankakee

City and administrative headquarters of Kankakee County, northeast Illinois, USA, on the Kankakee River, 50 mi/81 km south of Chicago; population (2000) 27,500. It is a distribution center for a rich corn-growing region; industries include building materials, furniture, pharmaceuticals, farm machinery, floor tiles, and pet food. Kankakee is the home of Olivet Nazarene College (1907) and Kankakee Community College (1966).

Settlers arrived in 1832, but the town was not formally planned until 1853 when the railroad station was built. Kankakee was incorporated in 1854.
