Kanō School

Japanese school of painting founded by Kanō Masanobu (c. 1434–1530); it was responsible for much palace and temple decoration of the period, characterized by broad, sweeping designs painted in rich colours on a gold background. Its two outstanding exponents were the prolific Kanō Eitoku (1543–1590) and his pupil Kanō Sanraku (c. 1560–1635), whose style was more restrained than that of his master's. Typical of the school are Sanraku's paintings on the sliding doors of the Daikaku Temple in Kyoto.
