Kinki

Region of south Honshu island, Japan, area 33,070 sq km/12,768 sq mi; population (1992) 22,343,000. The chief city is Osaka. The region contains the core historical area of the Japanese state which grew around Kyoto and Nara, and the early nucleus of national commerce around Osaka and Kobe. The region now contains the Hanshin industrial zone.
