Kaohsiung

City and port on the west coast of Taiwan; population (1998 est) 1,462,302. Industries include aluminium, fertilizers, cement, oil refineries, iron and steel works, shipyards, and food processing. Kaohsiung began to develop as a commercial port after 1858; its industrial development came about while it was occupied by Japan 1895-1945.
