Kaohsiung

City and port on the west coast of Taiwan; population (2006 est) 1,514,700. Industries include aluminium, fertilizers, cement, oil refineries, iron and steel works, shipyards, and food processing. Kaohsiung began to develop as a commercial port after 1858; its industrial development came about while it was occupied by Japan 1895–1945.

Container shipment volume of Kaohsiung harbor still dropped 11% year-on-year in the third quarter but the scale of decline was much lower than that in the second quarter.
Other major construction projects for which the mayor is seeking central government help include a plan to move all railway lines in Kaohsiung underground, a plan to build a pop music center in the Kaohsiung Harbor area, a proposed new highway to relieve the increased traffic caused by the High Speed Rail around the Zuoying district, and a plan to improve the access road system for the harbor.
In Kaohsiung, the major debate regarding urban planning issues over the past few months among all candidates has been mostly concentrated on the combination of the Kaohsiung City and the nearby Kaohsiung Harbor.
