Kaolack

Town in western Senegal, 190 km/118 mi southeast of Dakar, located on the Saloum River and connected by railway with Dakar and Bamako, Mali; population (2007 est) 186,000. Kaolack is an important river port dealing in groundnuts. After Marrakesh, the town has the second biggest covered market in Africa, and a large mosque, decorated in the Moroccan style. Industries include textile manufacturing. Cotton and groundnuts are produced locally.
