Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.04 sec. |
kaoliniteClay mineral, hydrous aluminum silicate, Al2Si2O5(OH)4, formed mainly by the chemical weathering of feldspar. It is made up of platelike crystals, the atoms of which are bonded together in two-dimensional sheets, between which the bonds are weak, so that they are able to slip over one another, a process made more easy by a layer of water. It is important in the manufacture of porcelain and other ceramics, paper, rubber, paint, textiles, and medicines. It is mined in France, the UK, Germany, China, and the USA. Based on the results of these trial tests, Ginn concluded and the DL Laboratories report shows that the calcined Sierra Kaolin[TM] based pigment product could be a replacement for premium, industry standard calcined kaolinite clay in flat interior latex paint applications and shared the #1 ranking order with the test standard based paint. The SK composite material was tested side-by-side against premium calcined kaolinite clay and premium ground calcium carbonate coating materials and the performance of the SK material indicate that the SK product is a viable pigment option for coating applications. Chemically, the feldspar grains in the granite have been altered to kaolinite clay, which is considerably softer than the original feldspar. |
