Kaposi's sarcoma

Kaposi's sarcoma

Malignant (cancerous) tumour developing from blood vessels in the skin. Previously rare in the Western world, it is now seen in patients with AIDS.

Twenty percent of HIV-infected gay men develop KS, and it is almost exclusively confined to this section of the population. KS-associated herpes virus (KSHV), identified 1994, may be the cause of the sarcoma.
