Kaprow, Allan

Kaprow, Allan (1927–2006)

US painter, theorist, and performance artist. Known for his assemblage and collage constructions, he is most famous for inventing ‘happenings’, unconventional theatrical events utilizing audience participation, as in 18 Happenings in 6 Parts 1959.

He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Based in New York City, he studied at the Hans Hofmann School 1947–48, with John Cage 1956–58, and at Columbia University.
