Kapuskasing

Town in central Ontario, Canada, on the Trans-Canada Highway and the Kapuskasing River, 386 km/240 mi northeast of Sault Ste Marie; population (1991) 10,300. It has been a major newsprint producer since becoming the site of the Spruce Falls Power and Paper plant in 1922.

An agricultural experiment station was built here in 1913 and a transcontinental railway depot in 1914. During World War I the town housed a large prisoner-of-war camp. In 1922 the Spruce Falls Power and Paper plant harnessed the power of Smokey Falls, 80 km/50 mi to the north.
