Kara Sea

Part of the Arctic Ocean off the north coast of the Russian Federation, bounded to the northwest by the island of Novaya Zemlya and to the northeast by Severnaya Zemlya; area 880,000 sq km/339,768 sq mi; average depths 30–100 m/98–328 ft, with a maximum of 620 m/2,034 ft. Novy Port on the Gulf of Ob is the chief port. Dikson is also a main port and is located on the mouth of the Yenisey River, which flows into the Kara Sea.

It is one of the coldest seas of the Russian Federation, with the water temperature above 0°C/32°F only near the river mouths in summer. Fogs and storms are frequent.

Due to the quirks of atmospheric transport, polar bears from East Greenland, Svalbard, and the Kara Sea have higher body burdens of organochlorines than polar bears from the rest of the Arctic.
The low levels measured in the Kara Sea may result from leftover fallout from nuclear tests or emissions from European nuclear facilities, Russian scientists suggest.
