Karachayevsk

Town in the Karachay-Cherkess Republic of the southwestern Russian Federation; population (1990) 21,800. Karachayevsk is situated on the River Kuban and the Sukhumi Military Road through the Klukhor Pass in northern Caucasia, 60 km/37 mi southwest of Cherkessk. It has woodworking and food-processing industries.

Karachayevsk was founded in 1927 as capital of the Karachayev Autonomous Oblast, and was part of Georgia 1943–55.
