karagoz

Turkish shadow-puppet plays, which take their name from the leading character Karagoz. He is an unpretentious ‘everyman’ who is contrasted with the hypocritical Hacivat. The element of caricature was taken from popular or street theatre, and relies heavily on comic dialogue.
