Karakol

City and capital of the Ysuk-Köl duban (oblast) in eastern Kyrgyzstan, situated 12 km/7 mi east of Lake Ysuk-Köl; population (1995) 80,000. There are food and light industries here.

The town was founded as Przhevalsk in 1869. The area around the town is renowned for its apple orchards. The spa tourism for which the lake region was formerly known has declined in post-Soviet times.

Near Karakol, on the shore of Lake Ysuk-Köl, is the grave of the Russian explorer Nikolai Przhevalski, discoverer of the early type of horse now known as Przhevalski's Horse.
