Karłowicz, Mieczysław (1876–1909)| Polish composer. The son of a noble family, he travelled much in Europe as a child and learnt the violin in Prague, Dresden, and Heidelberg, and soon played chamber music with his parents, a cellist and a pianist. He later studied at Warsaw, where his composition teacher was Zygmunt Noskowski, and afterwards with Heinrich Urban in Berlin, Germany. He also studied conducting with Arthur Nikisch at Leipzig. He settled at Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains in 1908 and was killed in a climbing accident. |
