Karpov, Anatoly Yevgenyevich (1951– )

Russian chess player. He succeeded Bobby Fischer of the USA as world champion in 1975, and held the title until losing to Gary Kasparov in 1985. He lost to Kasparov again in 1990. In January 1998 Karpov won the Fédération Internationale de Échecs (FIDE) World Chess Championship defeating Viswanathan Anand of India in the final. He lost the FIDE World Chess title in 1999 to Russian Alexander Khalifman.
