Karr, (Jean-Baptiste-)Alphonse (1808–1890)| French novelist, critic, and journalist. His first novel was Sous les tilleuls 1832. He became editor of Le Figaro 1839 and the same year he started Les Guêpes, a keenly satirical monthly journal. His best-known works are the novel Geneviève 1838 and Un voyage autour de mon jardin 1845. |
| Other works include Le chemin le plus court 1836, a continuation of his autobiography; Fort en thème 1850, a book which had some influence in promoting educational reform; and his reminiscences, Livre de bord 1879–80. |
