Karratha

Town in northern Western Australia, 1,535 km/954 mi north of Perth; population (1996) 10,100. It is an important centre for government services, particularly heath, education, and other social services.

The name is derived from an Karratha was developed from 1969 to service the surrounding iron ore industry and the offshore gas projects.
