Kashan

City in central Iran, 200 km/124 mi south of Tehran; population (1991) 155,000. Kashan was noted in the past for its silks and brocades; its present hand-woven carpet trade was revived in the 19th century. There is also a textile industry.

The city dates from ancient times and was formerly important as a site along the caravan route from Kerman to Esfahan. Prehistoric remains have been found at nearby Syalk.
