Kasparov, Gary Kimovich (1963– )

The 1993 Volvo World Chess Championship saw Soviet chess player Gary Kasparov comprehensively beat Britain's Nigel Short.

Azerbaijani chess player who has represented Russia in international competition. When he beat his compatriot Anatoly Karpov to win the world title in 1985, he was the youngest ever champion at 22 years 210 days. He held this crown for 15 years until November 2000 when he was beaten by a former Russian pupil, Vladimir Kramnik. During that time Kasparov lost only once – to IBM computer Deep Blue in 1997.

He was the Fédération Internationale de Échecs (FIDE) world champion from 1985 until 1993, when he helped set up the breakaway Professional Chess Association (PCA), and was then the PCA world champion until 2000.
