Kasserine Pass

Pass in the Memetcha Mountains about 240 km/150 mi west of Gafsa, Tunisia, of great strategic importance in the North African campaign in World War II.

Held by US II Corps under General Fredendall, it was attacked by the German 5th Panzer Army on 14 February 1943. The US forces were shattered, as were two US counterattacks on the following day. General Alexander quickly moved British and US forces into blocking positions to halt the German thrust before it could get clear of the mountains, but Rommel withdrew so skilfully that the Allies never realized he was gone. General Fredendall was subsequently relieved of his command and replaced by General Patton.
