Kastamonu

Capital of Kastamonu province in northern Turkey, 70 km/44 mi south of the Black Sea coast, 192 km/120 mi northeast of Ankara; population (2000) 64,600. Industries include textile manufacturing, and the production of copperware from locally mined material.

The Turkish leader Atatürk first announced the banning of the fez, a traditional Turkish hat, in a speech made in the city in 1925.

Its most notable mosques include the twin-domed medieval Ismailbey Camii, built on a rocky outcrop, and the handsome Nasrullah Kadi Camii.
