Katanning

Town in southwest Western Australia, 295 km/183 mi southeast of Perth; population (1996) 4,000. Local industries include the production of cereal crops, wool and beef, meat processing, and light manufacturing. The Roller Flour Mill, built in 1891, is listed by the Australian National Trust.

The district was explored in 1835. The town grew as a result of the opening of a railway between Perth and Albany in 1889. It became an important centre for government services, and experienced a boom after 1945 with the introduction of government schemes to settle former soldiers in agricultural areas. In the early 1970s Christmas and Cocos Islanders began settling in the town.
