Katims, Milton (1909-2006)

US violist and conductor. He played the viola and later became assistant conductor for the NBC Symphony Orchestra, then under the baton of Arturo Toscanini, 1943-54. He left to become conductor of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, where he stayed for 22 years (1954-76). He was well known as a chamber-music performer, particularly as an additional violist with the Budapest String Quartet.

Katims was born in Brooklyn, New York. After studying at Columbia University, he became the assistant conductor and solo violist for radio station WOR, 1935-43.
