Katmai

Active volcano in southwestern Alaska, one of a chain of volcanoes in the area; height 2,046 m/6,715 ft. Its eruption in 1912 created the ‘Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes’, a pyroclastic ash flow deposit which had hundreds of steam vents when first explored in 1916. The volcano was established as a national monument in 1918, and Katmai National Park (area 5,806 sq mi/15,038 sq km) was established here in 1980. Its attractions also include brown bears and the Brooks River National Historic Landmark, commemorating North America's highest concentration of prehistoric dwellings.

The lake-filled crater – which is about 5 km/3 mi wide and about 1,130 m/3,700 ft deep – formed from the 1912 eruption is lined with glaciers.
