Kauai County

County in northwestern Hawaii, containing Kauai, the privately owned Nihau Island, and two uninhabited islets, Lehua and Kaula; area 1,606 sq km/620 sq mi; population (1990) 51,200. The capital is Lihue, on the east coast of Kauai; Kapaa and Hanapepe are other major communities. The economy is based on sugar, rice, and pineapple cultivation; diversified light manufacturing; the tourist industry; and cattle ranching.
