Kaufbeuren

City in Bavaria, Germany, on the River Wertach, 28 km/17 mi southwest of Munich; population (1994) 42,600. It has glass, jewellery, electronic, and timber industries. Kaufbeuren was one of the city-states of the Holy Roman Empire, and has two Gothic churches.
