Kaukauna

City in east-central Wisconsin, on the Fox River, 10 km/6 mi northeast of Appleton; population (1990) 12,000. Products include precision tools, paper, and cheese and other dairy products.

The site of an early portage (route for transporting boats and supplies) around waterfalls on the Fox River, it was settled by the French in 1793. The state's first gristmill and sawmill were here. The Wisconsin International Raceway is just south of the city.
