Kaun, Hugo (1863-1932)

German composer. He had written over 150 works before he was 16 and studied with Kiel at the Berlin Academy of Arts. In 1884 he went to the USA as a pianist, but had to give up that career owing to an injury; in 1887 he settled in Milwaukee, but returned to Berlin in 1901, teaching composition first at the Academy and from 1922 at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory.

Der Pietist, Sappho (1917), Der Fremde (1920), Menandra (1925).

Orchestral

three symphonies, Minnehaha und Hiawatha (after Longfellow), symphonic prologue Marie Magdalene, humoresque Falstaff (after Shakespeare), and other orchestral works.

Chamber

four string quartets, piano quintet, two piano trios, octet; violin and piano sonata.

Other

several choral works.
