Kavala| Town in northeastern Greece, capital of Kavala department, built on a promontory; population (2001 est) 64,400. Its port handles 6% of Greek trade. Exports include tobacco and manganese, and imports include fertilizers, wheat, and timber. There are flour and rice mills. The town was a member of the Attica Naval League in 478–463 BC and was later a Roman naval base. |
| There is evidence that Neapolis occupied the site in 500 BC. Under the Byzantine Empire it was called Christopolis. It was destroyed by the Turks in 1368, but later rebuilt. |
| The Apostle St Paul visited Kavala in AD 50–51. It is the seat of an Orthodox archbishop. |
