Kavrakos, Dimitri (1946– )

Greek bass-baritone. He sang at the Athens Opera 1970–78, making his debut as Zaccaria. His 1979 debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Verdi's Grand Inquisitor was followed by return performances as Silva, Walter in Ernani, and Gounod's Capulet. Other performances have included Tchaikovsky's Gremin, and roles in Aïda, Fidelio, and Lakmé at the Chicago Opera; Alvise in La gioconda in San Francisco; the Commendatore (his debut at Glyndebourne, UK, in 1982); Pimen in Boris Godunov (1984), Douglas in La donna del lago, and Enrico in Anna Bolena (1988) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London; and Rossini's Moise in Tel Aviv (1993).
