Kawakami, Hajime (1879–1946)

Japanese Marxist academic. As an economics professor at Kyoto University, Kawakami was the author of the best-selling Tale of Poverty (1916). He moved towards Marxism after the October Revolution and joined the underground Communist Party in 1932. Arrested in 1933, he was imprisoned until 1937.

On his release he lived in seclusion until his death.
