Kayenta

Community in northeastern Arizona, south of Monument Valley and 26 km/16 mi south of the Utah border; population (2000) 4,900. It was founded as a trading post in 1910 and is now also a tourist base. Local uranium deposits contribute to its economy.

Kayenta is situated in an arid valley, on the site of prehistoric lakes, and is an important Navajo centre.

Artifacts found here suggest a convergence of different native cultures - Hopi, Zuni, Sinagua, Cohonina, Kayenta Anasazi - but it is unclear if this was a trading crossroads or a location where the different groups coexisted.
Northeastern Arizona's Long House Valley was home to the Kayenta Anasazi, one of several branches of a complex culture that disappeared from the American Southwest in the 12th century.
In the past four years, says Haas, 15 Kayenta cliff sites have been found.
