Kean, Edmund (1787–1833)

English tragic actor. He was noted for his portrayal of villainy in the Shakespearean roles of Shylock, Richard III, and Iago. He died on stage, playing Othello opposite his son as Iago.

His life story was turned into a romantic myth and dramatized by both the elder Dumas and Jean-Paul Sartre.
