Keane, John

Keane, John (Joseph) (1839–1918)

Irish-born US prelate. In 1878 he became bishop of Richmond. Regarded as a liberal, he earned a national reputation as a cofounder and first rector (1889–97) of Catholic University in Washington, DC. He held Vatican posts in Rome 1897–99, and was archbishop of Dubuque, Iowa 1900–11.

He was born in County Donegal. Emigrating with his parents in 1846, he settled in Baltimore, studied for the priesthood, and after ordination did parish work.
