Kearney

City and administrative headquarters of Buffalo County, south-central Nebraska, on the Platte River, 69 km/43 mi southwest of Grand Island; population (2000) 27,400. It is a processing and rail centre for grain and livestock producers; products include farm and irrigation equipment.

Nearby Fort Kearney (established here in 1848) once protected Oregon Trail pioneers. A University of Nebraska campus (1903) and Kearney State College (1905) are here.
