Kearny

Town in northeastern New Jersey, on the Passaic and Hackensack rivers, at the head of Newark Bay, between Newark and Jersey City; population (1990) 34,900. It has oil, gold, and platinum refineries, and is a manufacturing centre, producing communications equipment, chemicals, plastics, lorry bodies, paints and varnishes, bricks, tiles, processed foods, and textiles.

Kearny was separated from Harrison in 1867. Long known for its dry docks and bustling shipyards, which flourished during World War II, it still supports some shipbuilding.
