Kearny, Lawrence (1789-1868)

US naval officer. While commanding the East India Squadron 1840-42 he conducted diplomatic initiatives that led to the Open Door Policy and the first US-Chinese treaty in 1844.

He was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He joined the navy in 1807 and became a captain in 1832.
