Kedah

State in northwestern Peninsular Malaysia; capital Alor Setar; area 9,400 sq km/3,628 sq mi; population (2000 est) 1,572,100. Products include rice, rubber, tapioca, tin, and tungsten. Kedah was transferred by Siam (Thailand) to Britain in 1909, and was one of the Unfederated Malay States until 1948.

It is one of the least urban Malaysian states, with 39.3% of the population classified as urban in 2000.
