Keene

City and administrative headquarters of Cheshire County, southwestern New Hampshire, on the Ashuelot River, 16 km/10 mi northwest of Mount Monadnock; population (2000) 22,600. The city is a centre for the Monadnock region's commerce and winter sports. Products include optical instruments, furniture, textiles, and shoes.

The Boston and Maine Railroad stimulated industrial development after 1840. Keene State College (1909) is here.

Keene

City in north-central Texas, 37 km/23 mi south of Fort Worth; population (1990) 3,900. In an agricultural area, it developed around a Seventh-Day Adventist Academy (1893), now Southwestern Adventist College.
