Keetmanshoop

Town in Namibia, about 450 km/280 mi south of Windhoek; population (1990) 14,000. Keetmanshoop has a thriving karakul (sheep) wool trade, and is the main road transport hub for the south of the country. The town is often referred to as the ‘Queen of the Arid South’.

Founded in 1866 by German missionaries, the town was named after Johann Keetman, a German industrialist, who helped to finance the original settlement.
