Kai Islands

Island group in southeast Maluku province, Indonesia, in the Banda Sea; area 1,480 sq km/ 571 sq mi; population (1975) 50,000. The local economy is based on shifting cultivation, hunting, fishing, and gathering; the main commercial products include timber, copra, and trepang (edible sea cucumber). Cultivated crops include rice, yams, and tobacco, and the islanders are skilled in wood carving and boatbuilding. Tual, which lies on the western coast of Kai Kecil, is the main port and centre for administration.

Kai Besar, the largest island, has steep cliffs along its coast, and mountains that rise to almost 900 m/3,000 ft. There are dense forests on all of the islands, with ironwoods, palms, and fig trees, and animal life includes the wild pig and the cuscus.

The Kai Islands were colonized by the Dutch in 1645.
