Keith, Arthur Berriedale (1879-1944)

British Sanskritist and constitutional lawyer. In 1914 he became regius professor of Sanskrit and comparative philology at Edinburgh. He edited several Vedic and Sanskrit texts and wrote the Vedic Index of Names and Subjects 1912, Buddhist Philosophy 1923, and History of Sanskrit Literature 1928. He also became a leading authority in constitutional law.

He was born in Edinburgh and educated at Edinburgh University and Balliol College, Oxford. He published Responsible Government in the Dominions 1909, The Sovereignty of the British Dominions 1929, Constitutional History of the First British Empire 1930, The Governments of the British Empire 1935, A Constitutional History of India 1600-1935 1936, The King and the Imperial Crown 1936, and The Constitution of England from Queen Victoria to George VI 1940.
