Keith, George Keith Elphinstone, Viscount Keith (1746–1823)

English admiral who fought in the American Revolution, and the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. He took over the settlement at the Cape of Good Hope from the Dutch in 1796.

Keith distinguished himself as commander of the Perseus in the siege of Charleston in 1780 and again during the battle of Toulon in 1793. In 1797, he helped suppress the Nore mutiny and, after being appointed commander of the British fleet in the Mediterranean, took part in the victory over the French navy at the Battle of Aboukir Bay.
