Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Kelly, Ellsworth (1923– )

US painter and sculptor. He worked in a variety of media, and his sculptures are composed of curved metal planes. He was preoccupied with objects as art, colour patterns, and random collages, and his shaped canvas, Two Panels: Blue, Red 1968, reveals his exploration of colour as emotion.

Born in Newburgh, New York, he studied at the Boston Museum School 1946–48 and in Paris 1948–54.
