Kelly, Emmett (1898-1979)

US clown and circus performer. He created his ‘Weary Willie’ clown character while with the Hagenbeck-Wallace circus 1931. Joining the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus 1942, he made ‘Weary Willie’ into one of the most famous clowns in the world.

Born in Sedan, Kansas, USA, Kelly had early aspirations to be a cartoonist. He moved to Kansas City 1917, where he created the hobo character ‘Weary Willie’ that was later to become the inspiration for his circus persona. Kelly later became a familiar film and television personality.
