Kelly, Howard Atwood (1858–1943)

US gynaecologist and surgeon. He developed several new surgical techniques and diagnostic procedures, was one of the first US doctors to use radium to treat cancer, and wrote or edited several books on medical subjects.

He was born in Camden, New Jersey. After taking his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in1882, he made several visits to Europe to learn about the more advanced gynaecological methods. He founded the Kensington Hospital for Women in Philadelphia. In 1889 he became gynaecologist-in-chief at the new Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, and was a professor of gynaecology at Johns Hopkins Medical School 1893–1919, making Baltimore one of the USA's premier gynaecology centres.
