Kelly, Walt

Kelly, Walt (Walter Crawford) (1913–1973)

US cartoonist. He created in 1943 the newspaper comic strip Bumbazine and Albert the Alligator, which featured characters in Okefenokee swamp and eventually evolved into the classic strip Pogo in 1948, which was noted for its sharp political commentary.

He was born in Philadelphia. He worked as an animator for Walt Disney Studios 1935–41. One of his characters provides the frequently quoted aphorism ‘We have met the enemy and he is us’.
