Kempen

Region of northeast Belgium stretching between the rivers Scheldt and Meuse to the north of the Dyle and the Demer. It is an area of flat, sandy moorland. Hasselt, Herentals, and Turnhout are the chief towns.

The Kempen lies chiefly in the province of Antwerp, but also extends into Belgian Limbourg and Dutch North Brabant. Two important canals pass through the region; the most recent of these, the Albert Canal, was specifically constructed 1930–39 to encourage industrialization. It is 130 km/81 mi long.
