Kempten

City in Bavaria, Germany, on the River Iller, 104 km/65 mi southwest of Munich; population (2005 est) 61,400. The city is a market centre specializing in dairy products, and there are textile, paper, and precision-engineering industries. Kempten contains a baroque church, a Gothic Rathaus (town hall), and the former palace of the abbot-princes of the old imperial city.
